The Aldea Infantíl Pepita is a casa hogar that houses approximately 20–25 girls at a time. Although it is not an orphanage, for most of the girls, this is their home. The Aldea provides a sanctuary for children who have experienced neglect, sexual or physical abuse, or extreme poverty. Currently, there are 21 girls residing here, ranging in age from 3 to 19. Every girl is burdened with a difficult story. One was born in a prison, another in a brothel, some girls have parents who struggle with addiction, others survived sexual or physical abuse by a parent. Some spent most of their lives scavenging for their next meal in trash cans to feed their families. Many of the girls experience a lack of emotional regulation, PTSD, significant developmental delays, or even challenges such as urinary incontinence.
The Aldea, run by Salesian Sisters, ensures that each child receives three meals a day, daily showers, a personal bed, clothing, an education at a Salesian school, weekly Mass on Sundays, opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as cheer, band, and art, and, most importantly, the love and care of the sisters, workers and volunteers who support the Aldea.
My time here while incredibly life-changing, has been far from easy. I can honestly say I have cried more here than I have in my entire life (haha). However, what I have come to understand is that regardless of what is provided for these girls, they will always long for their families. Even when these parents have been neglectful, abusive, or physically/financially unable to care for their daughters, the girls continue to yearn for a home filled with love and comfort. It is incredibly difficult to witness this profound desire to love and be loved in each of their hearts. I ask you to keep these beautiful girls in your prayers over the holiday season, as their hearts and souls are constantly searching and longing for love.

THE MISSION/LA MISIÓN
La Aldea Infantil Pepita es una casa hogar que alberga aproximadamente de 20 a 25 niñas a la vez. Aunque no es un orfanato, para la mayoría de ellas este es su hogar. La Aldea ofrece un refugio para niñas que han experimentado negligencia, abuso sexual o físico, o una pobreza extrema. Actualmente, 21 niñas viven aquí, con edades que van de los 3 a los 19 años. Cada una carga una historia difícil. Una nació en una prisión, otra en un burdel; algunas tienen padres que sufren con adicciones; otras sobrevivieron abusos sexuales o físicos por parte de un padre. Algunas pasaron gran parte de su vida buscando comida en botes de basura para alimentar a sus familias. Muchas de ellas enfrentan dificultades como inestabilidad emocional, trastorno de estrés postraumático, retrasos significativos en el desarrollo e incluso condiciones como incontinencia urinaria.
La Aldea se asegura de que cada niña reciba tres comidas al día, duchas calientes diarias, una cama propia, ropa, educación en una escuela salesiana, oportunidades para participar en actividades extracurriculares como porristas, banda y arte, misa cada domingo y, sobre todo, el cariño y acompañamiento de las hermanas y voluntarios que apoyan la Aldea.
Mi tiempo aquí ha sido verdaderamente transformador, aunque no ha sido nada fácil. Honestamente puedo decir que he llorado más aquí que en toda mi vida (jaja). Sin embargo, lo que he llegado a comprender es que, sin importar lo que se les brinde a estas niñas, siempre anhelarán a sus familias. Incluso cuando estos padres han sido negligentes, abusivos o física/financieramente incapaces de cuidar de sus hijas, las niñas continúan deseando un hogar lleno de amor y consuelo. Es increíblemente difícil presenciar este profundo deseo de amar y ser amadas que existe en cada uno de sus corazones. Le pregunto que mantengas a estas hermosas niñas en sus oraciones durante la temporada navideña, ya que sus corazones y almas están constantemente en búsqueda de amor.
